A tale of two penalties
Bobby Pires was both hero and villain in the 1-0 victory
against northern monkey's Manchester Citeh at the weekend.
The Frenchman who is having 'one of the those' season's
or a right nightmare to give it's technical term was a
bit out of sorts, well like he's been all season. However,
he made amends to his indifferent season by smashing in
a penalty after Arsenal captain and all round Mr Nice Guy
Thierry Henry was brought down in the second half by Giorgio
Armani model and sometimes goal keeper David James.
However
it's the second penalty which will stay in peoples minds.
Many papers/sites have labeled the effort 'farcical and
disrespectful'. Everyone knows by now that Pires/Henry
attempted to emulate the Johan Cruff/ Jesper Olsen penalty
for Ajax when instead of taking a shot Cruff passed the
ball to Olsen, who then gave the ball back for a simple
tap in. Nice, When it comes off but Pires and King Henry
contrived to balls it up and now have got slated from pillar
to post. Had the plan worked out then all the papers/sites
would of been saying how much a genius young Bobby is.
Anyway they wont be saying that at all and you will be
able to see 'that penalty' on all good sports programmes
and even rubbish one's from now until the end of the season.
Bobby says sorry
Saint Wenger has spilled the beans on 'that penalty' and
has said that contract rebel Bobby Pires has apologised
for the penalty balls up. "Robert came to me after
the game, telling me he was sorry and that he had made
a big mistake. But as a manager, you have to live with
these things. My reaction after the incident was one of
surprise. Maybe if Robert had missed the first penalty,
you could have understood had he tried to pass the ball
as he would have been shaky. But he should have been full
of confidence after smashing in the first penalty so marvelously."
Pires has since tried to laugh it off by saying that he
wanted to bring some humour into the game, but had left
his clown suit at home.
Pires grasses up Thierry
Again still on about 'that' penalty Bobby Pires has revealed
that 'that' penalty was all King Henry's idea. Pires said: "Thierry
had the idea of [passing the ball], but I was not comfortable
with it."
All round Mr Nice Guy Thierry Henry has since apologised
for the penalty gaff and revealed "We did practice it in
training. But I
was the guy making the pass. It is the kind of thing that
when it does work it looks great, but when it doesn't -
well you saw what happened."
The jet propelled forward also revealed that from now
on he will take all the penalties "I
take the blame because it was my idea, I want to apologise
and from now on I will take all the penalties," he
added. "But what I want to say is that I won't take
the blame for Robert's leg going numb! However he didn't
reveal if he would attempt the penalty again.
