Yikes. It was likely to happen, I guess, the letdown. Following a virtuoso performance against star-studded AC Milan and comprehensively dispatching with the most successful Champions League team of the modern era, a drop in form was foreseeable, if not desirable. It's certainly not the mark of a champion. I can't imagine what it must feel like to come away from a victory like that in Europe only to travel north and play Wigan on a cow pasture with seating.
Our performance was as head-scratching as the team selection and positioning. Cesc wide, Kolo ending up on the right wing … Gilberto on the pitch. All of which are consequences of maintaining a comparatively small squad. We had a bright start, but allowed Wigan too much space and, credit to them, they took advantage and earned their point against the league leaders. The positives, if any: RVP is back, and I saw Bendtner and Ade pass the ball to each other a couple of times. Most importantly though,
If I sound deflated, it's because obviously this result continues our drop in league form, and I fear it might be hard to regain, assuming the Manc's snatch the lead. We still have the big three to play, oh and Liverpool as well. I worry about being forced to choose between domestic and European honors, and hope it doesn't come to that. Of course this season has far exceeded anyone's expectations save for the gaffer's, but it hurts to have the bit between your teeth only to seemingly let go at this, the wrong time. I'm certainly no pessimist – we host Boro next, who's reeling from two straight losses, and our squad will no doubt look to avenge our only league loss to date. Let's pull it together! A win is crucial and will serve as a statement of intent. We're up for this one – our "bouncebackability" for most of the season, including last Tuesday, has been masterful. It's time to call on it once again.
